Central University treats climate action, clean energy and community wellbeing as part of our academic mission — not a side project. From a 401 kWp solar campus partnership to programmes that train environmental engineers and development practitioners, we aim to model the responsibility we teach.

Sustainability at Central is coordinated by the Planning, Strategy & Sustainability (PSSP) Directorate and expressed through campus operations, teaching, research and public service.

Campus Energy

Powered by the sun — Miotso campus.

Through a Solar-as-a-Service agreement with Ecoligo GmbH (Germany), signed 26 November 2018, Central University operates a 401.28 kWp rooftop solar system at Miotso — with zero capital outlay from the University. We pay for clean energy consumed; Ecoligo supplies, installs and operates the plant.

CU × Ecoligo

How the partnership works.

Commissioned in November 2018, the plant delivers reliable low-carbon power to the Miotso campus and frees institutional funds for teaching and research. Performance is monitored array-by-array so maintenance can restore peak output.

Environmental Impact

What 444 tonnes of CO₂ avoided really means.

Clean energy is not only a utilities story — it is a climate story. Using the University’s published conversion factors, Central’s solar generation to date is roughly equivalent to:

~22,200 trees’ annual carbon uptake (≈ 50 trees per tonne CO₂)
~1.97m km of car travel avoided (at ~225 g CO₂ / km)
~118 Ghanaian homes powered for a full year on clean electricity
1.057m kWh of fossil-displacing energy since 2019
